Ghostwriting is the art of writing your story from scratch, in your”voice,” published with your name on the book as the author. As your ghostwriter I remain anonymous. As you may have guessed, most celebrity books are ghostwritten.
Sometimes the ghostwriter is acknowledged with the phrase “as told to” [the ghostwriter’s name]. Usually the ghostwriting is of the entire book, though sometimes it is limited to whole new sections of a completed manuscript to flesh it out, or create more clarity.
How Ghostwriting Works:
We periodically meet on the phone or in-person. You tell me your story and I ask questions along the way. From these interviews I learn your “voice” so the finished book sounds like you. My job is to style your book in your “voice” and put it together in a compelling, page-turner way.
Steps to a Finished Manuscript:
1. Ghostwriting is a collaborative effort. Once I have heard your story I will create the first rough draft that we will go over together. I will take out what doesn’t fit for you, and add details that come to your mind in the draft review.
My clients tell me that seeing their story on paper, even in rough draft mode, is not only thrilling, but often life-changing to see in black and white just how much they have experienced and overcome.
2. In draft #2 I will incorporate the new story material. This will be a more refined draft because I will do editing along the way. We go over the second draft together and tighten the story, clarifying anything that is a bit cloudy.
3. I will produce the third and final draft for us to go over for your final approval.
4. Your manuscript will be turned over to my proofreader to take a fresh look at the finished product. By the time I have done three drafts it is too easy to miss small typos and misspellings.
5. If you plan to turn the manuscript over to an agent to find a publisher, you will have the finished manuscript ready to deliver in both print form and in a Microsoft Word™ file.
6. If you plan to self-publish and wish to consider contracting with my publishing team, you may request a Flat Fee bid that covers the entire publishing process: typesetting, designing the cover, writing the back cover text, acquiring the LCCN, the ISBN, the Bar Code, the copyright, and the actual book production.
What Does Ghostwriting Cost?
The investment in a ghostwritten manuscript will run between $5,000 to $35,000, depending on:
- If you have already written your story and only need “book doctoring” to bring it to a professional level.
- How many interviews I estimate it will take to get your whole story recorded and transcribed.
- How much time I estimate it will take to shape your story into a well-written, page-turner book.
- If your telling your story requires additional outside research on my part.
The Good News is:
You don’t have to pay it all upfront. You will make an initial 25% deposit to begin the project, then we will divide 50% into installment payments during the writing process, with the final 25% installment due upon delivery of the finished manuscript.
Your Rights:
Though I will have written your book from scratch, only you and I (and anyone you tell) will know I was the writer. Your name will be on the book as the author.
This Means:
• You keep ALL the profits from your book.
• You keep ALL the royalties from your book.
• You keep ALL the rights to your book, including copyright, movie rights, foreign publication rights.
• Total confidentiality and non-disclosure of authorship.
• Everything spelled out clearly in writing.
